Critiques On 355 Build..

Just finished a 355 build and needed critiques and HP estimates from the knowledgeable guys here.. here is the build.

89 350 block(roller) bored. 30
906 vortec heads upgraded springs and reworked
Scat cast rotating assembly 9.7 compression with vortecs
Howard's 224/230@50, 501/509 hydraulic roller
Air Gap Intake
750 Holley Vacuum Secondaries
HEI distributor
Moroso 8mm wires
Autolite race plugs
1 5/8 long tube headers
2400 converter
Turbo 350 trans.

Goal was 400 maybe 425. Started engine Sunday and sounds great. Idle is great, exhaust is deep.

Looking for helpful hints and HP ESTIMATES

I would venture to say that it will make more in the range of 380-390. But with a little bowl porting that you could get another 15hp. The real number is that it should make about 410tq and at a decent rpm. At .500" there is really no need for a valve upgrade, the 1.94 intake valve will do just fine.

Ridiculous low-ball estimates. Can make a 420 HP with a Comp 268 XE cam and pocket ported heads. I would guess you're in the the 450 HP range with that cam. I assume you did the valve guide boss mod to handle the high lift of that cam. Please do a google search for the Chevy High Performance Goodwrench Chronicles. Think you'll be very happy with what you read.

I would put it in the 360-375 range.

This would probably dyno out around where your goals are. I'd say this could use a header with a larger 1-3/4 primary tube. Without that it's probably closer to around the 400 figure than 425. 425 starts taking more strident head work or a different aftermarket head and really good exhaust work. The area getting over 400 to 410 where small differences cause big gains or losses. Don't know what you mean by reworked Vortecs other than to get a half inch of valve lift the top of the guides needed to be reworked. This head will respond to mild pocket porting and likes a back cut valve on both the intake and exhaust. These are things that would let the other parts to allow the cam to reach its full potential, right now I think the cam, intake and carb are stronger than the some of the supporting cast.

Not with the factory vortecs, they are a very good factory head but it is very difficult to get 450hp out of them without any cleaning up since from the factory the are only flowing 225-235@.500". 450 wouldn't be impossible but it would take a 350 that was souly built for peak hp. But with some decent clean up this cam, heads, intake and compression could certainly make around 430-440.

It does look like a decent street motor though, it aught to be a blast to drive.

Like I said, 87, pocket ported Vortecs will get him there with that cam. He is probably at an easy 425 HP right now.

i think you are giving the vortecs a bit too much credit. here is an example:

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_..._rpm_410.shtml

this motor uses the performer rpm heads that flow about 5-10cfm more than the vortecs do across all ranges of the lift. it is using a similar cam, althoug it is a flat tappet. but yet this motor is making 410hp.

then take this motor:

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...etec_435.shtml

it is using the E TEC 170 heads which on the intake side are similar to the facotry vortecs, i imagine they are a slight bit cleaner, but as for the exhaust side these E-TEC heads have far more efficancy than the factory vortecs. this motor is using a hyd roller with about 10 more duration and about .040" more lift but yet it is making 435hp.

my original estimate of 380-390 is likely very close since these heads haven't been cleaned up. if he is lucky he is getting 400-410hp. but i think it is a hard push to say that his motor is making an "easy 425hp"

to the OP, take a look at these two engine and compair them to what you have built. you decide for your self. i said it before, on a budget this sounds like a very solid, fun street motor. i dont know too many people that are going to complain about 400hp on the street.

Like I said, you can google Chevy High Performance and their Mr. Goodwrench Chronicles stories about how they took a Mr Goodwrench short block, stabbed a Comp 268 XE cam in it (NOT a roller by the way) Eddy Performer RPM, ,1.6 ratio rockers, pocket ported Vortecs and a 750 Holley and made 420 HP.

Not my car, not my engine. Don't have a dog in the fight. Besides, an engine builder should know how much power the engine he's building should make. Wants to know for sure? Dyno it. Better yet, race it. Anything else is just bench racing and trying to impress the cruise-in crowd with B.S. numbers.
