Cross member actual strength??

We need to modify or replace the stock cross member on the 78 Malibu.
We are running a 3" exaust off the 496 BB headers and with the collector on the driver side being a few inch's from it as well as the pipe not clearing are trying to deside what to do. The replacement double hump one won't clear the big pipe either as we looked at that.
My question is, How much actual load/torque is this piece under?

We run mufflers in our class so just open headers is not an option.

We are considering "C" notching and reinforcing with boxing the open end's,flat stock on top, and a "U" (bottom piece of a loop)on the underside.
This total overkill?
Any other options?

Thanks, Mike.

Big pipe Blues

That has a fair load but not as much as you're motor mounts.
It does however serve as a frame stiffener too.
This might sound strange, but is there room to slightly flatten out
your pipe into an oval, retaining the original area inside?
I had to do this on a 'Cuda and it worked well.

That's what I did to the crossmember in the driver's side in my 442. My engine makes 500 ft-lbs and it's held up fine so far. If this Malibu is a drag car you might want to look into a roll cage to stiffen the entire chassis, though.

This what I did. I took the stock cross member and welded a piece of channel to the top. Then i cut the entire section of crossmemeber out.
