Maintains preload on the pinion bearing which allows for some wear to occur during it's lifetime so that there is no need to periodically adjust it.

yes the crush sleeve keeps preload on inner race to keep it from spinning, in my old draggin days we used to re-use them and locktite the bearing, works well if you are changing gears often.

It used to be that you set up the pinion bearings with a solid sleeve and spacers, it was time consuming and too hard for inexperienced line mechanics to do correctly. They introduced crush sleeves to simplify the job by having a spacer that "crushed" a specified amount under torquing.
