I know this topic has been talk before , but everything that i had read has some sort of computer to regulate the voltage, I have a 1969 camaro with with a non original 350 chevy engine and V belts, I an planning to remove the V belts and the brackets and converted to a single serpentine belt, the donor parts came from a 1999 chevy caprice it has a cs 130 alternator i also remove the exiter plug , this particular plug had three wires , red to S, maybe brown white stripe to F and looks like a solid brown to L, my question can i connect the red wire to ignition sense, and dont connect the other wires or in between the red and ignition sense i have to put a resistor, any help or input will be apreciate it.
I'm going the 1-wire approach for this alternator. I'm leaving the L terminal unconnected (not using the charge indicator lamp).
If this works, then why do I see so many people wiring the L terminal to a resistor when they are not using the indicator lamp? That makes it seem like that terminal is required and the resistor is necessary in place of the lamp.
Normally you do not need the lamp, however, I assume, some vehicles have an ALT monitoring by the computer and will throw a code if it doesn't see the resistance (either a lamp or a resistor) Jeep, I know for a fact does this.
The CS130 has a very flexible interface and is designed to be wired in a number of ways. The computer interface (P terminal) is not required and you can just leave it unconnected. The GEN light terminal (L terminal) can be used with a dash light if you have one. If not, the field terminal (F terminal) is used instead. The resistor is already incorporated in the regulator, so all you have to do is wire the F terminal to switched 12V.
I'll point out that if you do use the L terminal as the exciter and the bulb burns out, the alternator will not charge. Do NOT ask me how I know this... I'm going to add the F wire to avoid this problem in the future on my 62. Factory installations apparently have a resistor in parallel with the bulb to avoid this problem.
