Post Current Land Speed Record

Buddy and I were BSin, about the Green Monster and the Spirit of America, and we both came up stupid.

Who knows:

1.The record set by the Green Monster.

2.The record set by Spirit of America.

3.The current land speed record and the record breaking car and driver.

Not sure of the actual number and I could be wrong considering its been a while. I do beleive Sperit of America is in second and the green monster (Thrust)is ahead. I think the land speed record is just above mach 1(mach 1 is the speed of sound), but I'm not 100% on it.

Almost exactly 100 years after the first land speed record was set.
In October of 1997, Andy Green, an RAF fighter pilot, driving for Noble in the Thrust SSC did the unthinkable by breaking the sound barrier at Mach 1.002. In the process, he set a new two way average record run of 763.035 mph. While the ThrustSSC stands alone in its class of land speed record vehicles, there are those who are setting their sights on getting the record back; working quietly and patiently until their time comes to take a crack at the record. Other vehicles will no doubt join this elite class some day.

Sorry, but I can't quite accept a jet without wings as a LSR champ. In my book, the true LSR must be wheel driven. But then, I was born in the 40s and was reared on hot rods on the salt.

willys36@aol.com
you did note that is said it was in a class of it's own

here is the first land speed record for you too

The first record was set in 1898 by Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat of Paris, France. His single run through a measured kilometer took 57 seconds; an average speed of 39.24 mph (63.13 kph). All he wanted to do was prove that his automobiles worked well. What the Count started was a challenge which has sparked the imagination of millions of children thrilled with speed, but has lured only a select few adults to accept that challenge over the last century.

and just a side note for the drag racers out there....
The 100 mph barrier was quickly broken later in 1904 when the land speed record returned to France. Louis Emile Rigolly was one who loved racing wheel-to-wheel with an opponent and is considered the world's first true drag racer. After being defeated in a standing mile race by Paul Baras, Rigolly decided to do something spectacular to save face; he flew through the kilometer at 103.55 mph (166.64 kph).
has any one else noticed that fraance started this whole speed thing or is it just me?

yes they are all things... and although they go fast and look cool they are still in a way cheaters.. I mean why not rip the wings off a fighter jet, give it more power and send it down the runway at full speed???

You really can't expect the fastest ride in the world to be a stret legal F-body.

True, you can't cruise em at the drive in, but the same goes for 5 second dragsters.

I've ridden 150mph bikes and cars, and trying to imagine going 5 times that fast just blows me away.

correct on the Thrust SSC, 763.035 mph, black rock desert, nevada, andy green driver, aiming for 850mph. their web site w/over 600 pages is is [URL=http://www.thrustssc.digital.co.uk]www.thrustssc.digital.co.uk[/URL but it isnt working. gotta poster on my wall with all the lsr's on it with dates/speeds. btw stanley STEAM car went 120 in 1906! WE'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY! NOT!!! refering to our gasoline dependency. also the thrust uses railroad car wheels for "tires". i posted this before, i'm glad some of you remembered the name of the "car" anyway.
richard Noble is the director of the ssc project. i think breedlove had another car out there at the same time. whoever it was flipped on it's side at over 600 mph and it didn't roll, just slid to a stop. pretty sure it was breedlove or breedlove's car. what sucked about trying to watch them run was it's an hour north of reno in the middle of nowhere and you couldnt tell if they would run or not. if the slightest wind came up: cancelled, if the temp went up too high, then the speed of sound would go higher: cancelled, if this, if that, so the uncertainty kept me from going out to watch it, since it meant i'd have to take the day off work

According to the March 2003 issue of Hot Rod, page 12, Nolan White set the piston engine speed record at 413 mph during the 2002 Speed Week at Bonneville.

Unfortunately, he lost his life in October trying to increase the record.

I COULDA SO SHOULDA ANSWERED YOUR OTHER QUESTIONS: THE RECORD SET BY THE GREEN MONSTER DRIVEN BY ART ARFONS WAS FIRST THE FIRST TIME HE BROKE THE 526MPH RECORD OF CRAIG BREEDLOVE WAS ON OCT. 15TH, 1964 WHEN HE WENT 536.71. THEN CRAIG RETURNED THE FAVOR WHEN HE WENT 555.48 ON NOV 2, 1965 IN THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA-SONIC 1. THEN ART WENT 576.55 5 DAYS LATER ON NOV 7TH, 1965. ONE WEEK LATER, CRAIG WENT 600.60. QUITE A RUN BACK IN NOV OF '65

IN CASE YOU ARE INTERESTED, ON OCT 23, 1970 THE BLUE FLAME WENT 622.41 WITH DRIVER GARY GABELICH; THEN ON OCT 4TH 1983 NOBLE WENT 633.47 IN THE FIRST THRUST 2 AND THE FIRST TIME THE SPEED RECORD WAS SET IN NEVADA'S BLACK ROCK DESERT (THE SITE OF THE BURNING MAN FESTIVAL AT WWW.BURNINGMAN.COM THAT RECORD HAS STOOD UNTIL '97 WHEN NOBLE'S CAR BROKE THE SOUND BARRIER AGAINST I THINK, THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA 2 AGAIN I THINK, DRIVEN AND NOT JUST OWNED BY, CRAIG BREEDLOVE, BUT IT ROLLED ONTO IT'S SIDE AT 600+ AND SKIDDED TO A STOP. (HEY, IT'S BETTER THAN SLIDING THREW A TELEPHONE POLE AND ENDING UP IN A POND)

Thumbs up

TM454, Nolan White set the record in Aug of 2002 at Speedweek (I was there). He drove a AA/BFS streamliner. This car was loaded withe TWO Big Block Blown Chevys. It was four wheel drive.
Nolan died in this same car in Oct at World of Speed held at Bonneville also. There was an article on SCTA web site regarding Nolans death.
