Custom sbc intake question

I saw a custom sbc intake in the 4sale section, and was wondering if some one had any suggestions on how to make one.I would like to make an aluminum valley pan with a raised 4x2 carb set up.I dont have a picture handy but most of the time I see them on hemi's at car shows. Im not looking to make any thing fancy just something a little different .Any input would help.Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the HR forums!

I can't help much on building one but trying to make it work well will be next to impossible. It will look cool but trying to get four, 2bbl carbs sync'd and operating correctly will be real tough. Plus, performance will suffer big time with that many carbs on a small block. BUT....it can be done and may be ok depending on what you are wanting it to do.

If you're a decent fabricator and welder making an intake isn't all that difficult. You want the base and sides a little dimensionally thick so the height and width are a little large as a final trip thru the machine shop to set the dimensions and mill off weld induced warpage is necessary. So jigging up on an engine isn't the best idea.

Model the top of the engine in wood to provide about an extra 1/8 in the width between the heads and distance from the manifold bolt center line to the top of the valley. Fill this extra eighth inch with the solid metal that makes the valley cover and the port side flanges. After welding the passages and plenum, carb adapters, whatever your design entails, then the sides and bottom are milled to achieve the dimensional fit to an assembled engine.

Some guys like to weld up a valley and port sides then use fiberglass and resin for the runners which can also be fabbed out of light sheet aluminum or tube, round or rectangular, depending on what you have in mind if your a good tin smith and welder. Some guys like to shape the plumbing from fiberglass and resin for quick and cheap ways to sort out ideas. For an experimental model you can epoxy exact dimension parts made from plate together, but keep in mind that aluminum and epoxy does not make a life time part. But it's a way to cut and try ideas without getting so expensively and timely involved in part fabrication as opposed to trying many ideas.

JGB7038, You must be a brother from another mother. I always wanted a Man-A-Fre intake but they quit giving those away a long time ago. I decided to make my own. I thought of the different ways I could go about it. First was a log style like a Weiand Dragstar (which was sold in a kit form). Second was high rise single plane mill the top off and have eight runners looking up,then build a top plate. The idea I ran with is I started with a stock TBI intake and milled the whole top off. Being a dual plane intake the top runners are gone. The bottom runners act like a ballancing chamber. Four small pattern rochesters and self made linkage. Mine is almost done. I've worked on it off and on for 2 years. When i reach frustration point or engineering problem, I would take a break and walk away for a while. I'm at work now(shhhh.) so I don't know If I have pics here, but I will post pics some time. Also noticed you're from In. Me too. PM if you want to tell me where you are at. You could come over and see my set up. Later Danny My project jounal is under top fuel55 pic there.
