For engine cylinders, Ball or brush hone is only way to go.
But these are only for conditioning a good minimal wear cylinder.
What grit is recommended? I'm changing pistons in a recently bored block (less than 5000 miles) - it still has cross hatching and no ridge. I checked for overbore and there less than .0005" anywhere in the bores (my bore measuring tool is accurate within .0003".)
