Does anyone know what grit I should use. My cylinder walls are in great shape I just want to re establish the cross hatch to where it looks new. Also my cylinders are 4 inch so should I use a 4 inch or one just a tad bigger. All I could find was a 120 grit 4 inch and a 120 grit 4.125 inch. They have bigger but I would think one of those would be what I need.

Sounds funny but the last ball hone i got was from amazon they had every size and grit. Also had fast shipping. If you want good brand name amazon usally has the best internet price. Snap on is crazy price for average guy to buy if only going to use it once.

Your not looking for a regular cylinder hone are you? Normally these days i let the machine shop hone because there computer hone is acurate within .0001 of an inch.

I normally use a ball hone for blocks that dont need cut. They dont really romve any metal and are easier to use for first timer.

120 is pretty ruff you may not need that much. Also use some motor oil on the cylinder walls while honing. Lots of oil and a few swipes per cylinder and your done. More is less. Literly!

240 320 you want small scratches not big ones.

I bought one from this site (Welcome To EngineHones.com) i went with the 240 grit,& the hone should be the same size as the cylinder bore.

Those are really called glaze breakers at least that is what we called them years ago. FWIW do not use motor oil with them. Motor oil will clog the surface of the stones. We used to use Varsol or some other thin solvent and got great results. Place a tub under the block and flood the cylinder with Varsol as your working the tool up and down.
