I am interested in purchasing a cylinder honing tool and the replacement stone grits.

I check on google and ebay for some Honing tools but there is not enough detailed information.

I AM GOING TO USE THIS TOOL FOR:
Single Cylinder Engines. A 5hp Briggs engine, a Honda Moped engine maybe down the road use it one some multiple cylinder engines. Piston sizes between 2in - 4in ( this is just an estimate)

What I want to know:
Should i get a 2 or 3 stone honing tool?
Where can i buy one? I want to be able to purchase the replacement stones from the same store.
I want to be able to purchase the Course, Medium and Fine grit stones from the same store.

Because i am doing the crank case i am not interested in the brake hones. Also the Briggs motors are all Aluminum as well as the other engines i am doing.

How long should it take me to hone each cylinder?

You would probably do well with a hone like this. It uses std. Sunnen stones and works well whit the majority of sizes you are likely to encounter.

If you need a hone for a smaller bore size,, consider the jr. hone.

why is the price so expensive of these?

The ones i looked at were so much less expensive. Why is this unit so much more? whats so special about it? does it work with a portable drill?

IMO that KD is going to be hard to beat for the work you have described, I have used one for years on engines of different types but mostly for honing hydraulic cylinders. Stones can be found at many auto parts and thing is sturdy enough to last for a LONG time, mine sure has.

I got one years ago from a local parts store.
I've been getting replacement stones from AutoZone stores
in different grits-they seem to work just fine for me.

What is KD?

Do the hones you have use a 3 shoe or 2?

Do you think that the actual tool matters in terms of quality? I do have two engines to do so i dont mind spend the extra bucks, but i prefer NOT to. These are just home projects for fun.

The KD in your first link is the one I am referring to. Use a 3 stone hone and yep quality does make a difference since pressure needs to be evenly distributed and the results of a stone or other part coming loose during operation can be disastrous to a bore.

i didnt even realize that this was a 3 shoe hone. Ill order it when i can confirm that i can easily find replacement shoes

You should be able to find that hone and replacement stones at most any large auto parts, I think even Auto Zone carries KD here. Lisle is another brand that is an excellent hone and like the KD it, and parts, can be found quite easily at Auto supply stores.

Well i went down to the auto zone.
I purchase the cylinder honing tool which comes with medium grit stones. I purchased the course grit stones.

They didn't have the fine grit stones. Will i even need these? i have alot of honing to do, lets see what happens to the cylinder damage. Im going to host pictures tomorrow

I would have went with the flexi stone. It produces a great cross hatch pattern.

True but that is about all it does and with a little practice the stones will produce as good a pattern and you can do more with a good conventional hone. One thing you want to avoid is dragging the hone out of the cylinder while it is stopped because it will leave three vertical marks in the cylinder walls. I have seen this a lot and it amazes me how some people will do this and seem to think it does not hurt anything. Simply squeeze the stones together to relax the pressure before removing the hone and you will not have this problem. A few years ago I had a machine shop in Knoxville Tn bore and hone a Ford V6 block for me and every cylinder had these three marks in the walls where the "machinist" had removed the hone. When I complained to the shop manager he said that won't hurt a thing we do it all the time! Sure enough when I left the place I noticed in the short blocks they had sitting there for sale that EVERY one of them had these cylinder marks! I am not sure what they used to hone these engines with and these marks could actually be felt but even if you can not feel them they should not be there, there simply is no reason to do it. On a Ford 300 six some years ago the same thing happened and when I complained that time I was told "Aw don't worry about it they will fill up with oil and be ok"

one a side note what kind of valve spring compressor can i use to remove these springs and valves?

There is a special valve tool made just for that type engine....should be able to find them around most auto parts or small engine shops. Usually pretty cheap, at least the ones I used to use were. Haven't done a small engine in years though.
