the converter thing . we had one that the converter would not release. on an olds quad 4. at a stop it would shake and shiver and bog the engine down and almost kill it and then shook the whole car when moving. felt like we were trying to move a rock.

I would not rule this out, because torque converters do not lock up until between 25 and 45 MPH. They can cause a "shudder".
