dana 60

so instead of building a 9" for my street truck I am wanting to take the dana 60 I have out of a 68 chevy 3/4 ton pick up with 8 lug and 3.50 gears and a power lock so I need a 5 on 4 3/4 bolt pattern and while I am at it I think ill narrow it about 3" per side I have a van 9" that I will use for the axles any suggestions on where I can look to see what someone else has done on a similar project

Can't do it, the 9" will have either 28 or 31 spline axles in it stock, the DANA 60 comes with 35 spline axles stock. The 9" axles aren't large enough diameter to cut 35 splines on.

The only way to do this is to use 9" Large Bearing housing ends and brakes on the DANA housing, and then have custom axles made by Moser, Strange, Mark Williams, or any other race axle manufacturer. I've done this on Drag cars to get rid of the full-floating axles and 8-lug drums.

ah but actually a rear dana 60 only came with 30 spline fronts STARTED coming with 35 spline in 1977 I am into 4x4s real big where I live and it is almost mandatory for a dana 60 front end with 40 inch tall tires in the mud and rocks with a big block and 5.13 axle gears and a 2.7-1 low range but I am getting into this drag race thing and you can cut the 9" axles and have them resplined to 30 to fit the 60 for 80 dollars per axle and the reason I am using the van rear end is it is 3" wider on each side which gives me enough room to cut off old splines and have resplined and it has a bigger axle bearing but only fronts came with 35 spline this is 30 spline

Maybe you are right about the Chevy Dana 60 rear being 30 spline, but I have never seen one this way, only the dana 44 w/ 30 spline. Every Dana 60 rear I have ever dis-assembled had 35 spline but they were Ford and Chrysler Full-floating rears.

Since you are new to the Drag race scene, note that the rules do not allow resplined axles in anything faster than 11.0 seconds, then they have to be aftermarket to be legal.

This is done all the time, you use the Big Bearing Ford housing end to get rid of the full-floating junk. Much, much stronger housing and much cheaper than a full-tilt race 9", while the Ford ends make it easy to find drum or disc brake kits and eliminate the need to find a rare car Dana 60 housing (Hemi Chrysler car=$$$$) along with the troublesome end play adjustable type Chrysler car axle bearings.

hi there
i may have some info that may be of help posibly:

alot of the early rear dana 60 axles were less spline than 35. ive had a few of these C-20 dana 60 rears the most recent from a 67 C-20 and they never have been 35 spline.

many are pow-r-lok though, which is nice
but most were 4.56 ratio though.

the truck dana 60s just were different than the car ones RE the splines and such

good luck

You might measure the diameter of the axle and make sure the diameter is there for the new spline count, shorten and respline not a problem,But most place's will not add any material to the axle.

Ford motorsports has a really good disc brake set up with the E/brake and it's really good priced. If you do the Disc set up make sure and tell the people who are redoing the axles so you can make sure the spacing come's out correct.

I've only used the big 11" ford drums, so I can't help you there.
