Question Dana series 3 carrier in an old Chevy housing

I've got an old Chevy non-P case,(55-61), with a Dana series 3 posi. carrier shoe-horned into it. It's got an old GM 3.55 ring and pinion in it that needs to be replaced. There are a few problems I see with this application so far.

#1 There is a hardened shim welded to the carrier between the carrier flange and the ring gear.

#2 The ring gear retainer bolts are ground off on one side to clear the case.

Is this an old racing trick or is this "THING" I've got here, just a b-astardized setup and not worthy?
I've got an old open diff. with a perfect ring and pinion and I'd like to put 'em on the posi. unit, just for sheets and geegles... It would be a real cheap way for me to get another posi. unit put together but I'm really not schooled on this retrofit..

Anybody ever been here and done this, or is there a better approach to budget traction?
