Dart Pro 1 Valve Spring Pockets

While setting up my heads, I don't have room under the springs to insert a hardened shim to make the correct installed height, leaving the aluminum head in contact with the spring. I can't imagine this is good for the heads' spring seat. Is it in fact O.K. to install them 'naked' or should I have them machined for clearance to put some sort of protection under these springs?

How serious is it to install the springs maybe .010 - .020 short of the recommended height as long as I don't run into coil bind or rocker interference?

You need to get the right installed height. This affect's closed pressure and you don't want the valves bouncing off their seats. It can pop the heads off pretty easily.

Do not install the springs without hardened shims, it won't last long.

I understand that John, if necessary I will have them machined then. I'm not sure that installing them .010 short would be a problem, if anything I'm thinking that would provide more seat pressure. I would never consider installing them taller than recommended. My concern is for the ones that are right on as they are, wear of the aluminum under the steel spring during normal operation. It seems to me the springs would eat into the aluminum in no time at all.

I guess I didn't read well enough. You saying the springs measure .010 smaller than spec, right. I mean .010 less distance between the seat and retianer. I would go with smaller before bigger but the aluminum won't last long under the strain. The shims act as load spreaders. You didn't say what lift but you might get away with a shorter spring and shim from there.
