de smog

i am wanting to de smog my 1983 winnebago rv it has 454 any one got any feed back?

Hey
I am a full time RVer.
If done properly it will benifit you. The expence might not help you.
You must remove the pump, close all the lines on yor exaust manifold.
The best absolute thing to do is get good fitting headers.
reroute your vacume lines. Re jet and tune yor carb.
Then you will have to fool with your timeing. You will need to advance but be careful this is not a street machine. It is more like a truck running under a load full time.
I suggest putting in a ram inductin set up for your carb.
The one thing I forgott is you must figure out the proper belt to replace that pump. You will find the rest of the job fairly easy.
If you don't do all of it you are waisting your time and can cause engine problems.
Yes I have done mine and together it make a big differance. I went fram 7MPH to 9.9.

Unless you are putting on headers, there is no reason to remove the air pump as it uses almost zero horsepower. Same with the EGR if you have one. Both are there for a reason and don't hurt performance at all. Plus, if down the road, you have to pass an inspection test, it ALL has to go back on and that won't be cheap!

You can do some carb and timing work and get some results, or do a cam change and good dual exhaust and gain a little more. You can also buy headers that have the A.I.R. injection fittings in them for your pump lines.

It is against Federal (and many states) law to remove any of it.

Whatever you do don't remove the carbon canister and all the vacuum lines for it. That is how your gas tank vents. Also don't remove the PCV valve. When working properly you can get better mileage with EGR so you should leave that too. The only thing that you could really gain anything good from removing is the smog pump...but don't mess with that unless you put headers and a good dual exhaust on it because the exhaust will make a much bigger difference than the smog pump would.

If you do remove any of it put it all in a box and save it in the garage. More and more states are starting to do smog testing and like said before finding and replacing those parts can be a PITA.
