Deck Question

The block I'm building for my chevy 383 with is a virgin 4bolt main never been bored over. I can assume the deck is the standard .025" (i think its .025) deck height? Is there anyway to tell without doing a dry assembly and checking the piston in the bore? I want to mill the deck to around .010-.015" for a good quench.

The deck height is actually around 9.025" but I think you got the idea.

Add half your stroke, plus the rod length, plus piston pin height. That will give you where the piston crown should be at TDC. Then measure the actual deck height (which should be 9.025") and then talk to the shop about decking.

You can also (if you don't want to mill the deck) use a custom piston pin height to set how far you are in the hole.

The GM 010 blocks are suppose to be 9.025 and from what we have seen as When we set a block in our CNC machining center we have a probing cycle which automatically checks the cylinders for blue print location and it also checks the deck heights in 6 places on each deck and we have seen variations for 9.015 to 9.037.

At our shop we have always calculated out the deck heights and so far no complaints on what we have shipped out the door so far as if we had to take the time to fit everything first we would never get any thing done in the shop.

If your dealing with a good shop they should be able to calculate out your deck heights and if the have good equipment and measuring equipment the should be able to do a good job.

Its a good idea to square and deck the block before setting a boring bar on the decks.
