Pinstripping is a very old art. Probably goes clear back to the Romans and their chariots! Just as the name implies, it is the process of drawing a narrow stripe of paint as a decoration on an item. In the modern automobile era, pinstripping is as old as cars. Check out nearly any old car body and it probably has at least one 1/8" wide of complementary paint color on a body feature. Factories hired hundreds of 'artists' to had paint those lines. Some of them got bored doing the same old straight line and started doodling. I think I heard a story that Von Dutch got his start that way. Probably not true but at my age who can blame me for lying! In the 40s he and a bunch of other 'rebel' hot rodders began doing the art work we are so familiar with as pinstripping nowadays.

Damn. I thought, "pinstripping" came from a verb “to strip”.
