Post Definitions pertaining to engines

I need some help on definitions; what does Siamese Bore mean? How about dry sump? I’ve run across both terms, but I don’t know what they mean.

siamese bore refers to the configuration of the water jacket inside the block, in a non siamese bore block the water in the block covers the entire outer surface of the cylinder, in a siamese bore the cylinders does not have water between them and are "siamesed" enabling you to bore the block more yielding a larger displacement motor, examples are teh 400 cui SB chevy, or the Bowtie big block that can be safely bored to 4.600 inches (stock is 4.125)

dry sump is an oilingsystem where a pump continuisly pumps the sump dry and fills an external oil container, from where the oil needed to lubricate the engine is pumped, this gives less windage in the cranck case and gives a bigger vacuum under the pistons giveing a better piston ring seal.

hope it hepled
