I'm trying to degree my first cam. It's a XE 262 H10 in a 406 sbc.
My first step put TDC 2* retarded from the original timing mark. :drunk: Has the dampner ring slipped? Is there a measurement from the keyway to the timing mark on the dampner that can be checked?
If you used a positive stop on #1 piston to find true TDC, then the balancer might have slipped but I bet it's the pointer or the dampener is just off a bit. If you suspect the dampener, junk it and get a new one. Do step 1 again.
Thanks for the reply. borrowed another 400 dampner and it showed 2 degrees retarded, too. I'll put on timing tape and set it to the new TDC.
Come to think of it, shouldn't any 8" dampner have the TDC at the same place? If all same sized dampners are marked the same then it'll be easy to check for slipped ring.
AFAIK all GM 454 dampeners have the mark in the same place. I think it lines up with the keyway in the hub. I've never had good luck with timing tape, but YMMV. I use an adjustable timing pointer. Or you could just re-mark the dampener. Good luck!
