Delicate posts

We've had some topics go south on us recently. The Zimmerman deal, it got quite heated and some racist remarks were made. This site will not tolerate these remarks. Techinspector1 has been suspended for 30 days. We've had a discussion on the thread in the moderators forum, the mod that edited that thread felt uncomfortable discussing the format of the subject, I did not get to read the thread before it was edited but I got the gist of the words being used.

No more of this will be tolerated. This is not the first time Tech1 has been suspended, frankly I don't care if he returns or not. He's had his 2 chances, the next suspension will a forever suspension. We just don't need that type of behavior here. We don't want to stop off topic subjects that can get heated, but we will be more diligent on closing them in the future. If the subject can't be discussed in a civil matter, it will be shut down. Skirt the profanity filters, it will get you a suspension. Leave the hatred somewhere else.

I never followed the Zimmerman thread, we don't get near as much of that type of news up here in Canada and when it comes to anything race related, I get disgusted by the situation. It seems that any comments can start a major conflict and I'm here to discuss vehicles, help out where I can and learn.

As I said, I never got involved in any of the Zimmerman thread. I don't know what Techinspector1 said to get the suspension and if it was unneeded comments regarding race, I'm sure it was deserved and I wouldn't expect anything less from the moderators.

I have always respected "Techinspector1" insight and knowledge and I have learned a great deal from him, I thank him for that, however, I do not respect intolerance, prejudice and or the use of profanity on a site designed for the enthusiast and I applaud the fact that the playing field will be scrutinized more stringently. There isn't any need for that here or any where else for that matter.

I subscribed and may even have posted on that thread, but cancelled my notifications and stopped reading the thread when it got way too far off base and into literal name calling and negative racial relations. Racial relations is a subject that needs to be aired positively - but not in an automotive site's lounge area or anywhere else on the site. It's too bad that Richard has had to be put on vacation, but rules are rules, and I suspect he was given some warning by the mods that he was near the edge too, and chose to plow on regardless. He is a wealth of knowledge and has helped many with that knowledge even if he and I did disagree on occasion.

As a note - I follow a couple of news sites and bloggers - and the racial subject is getting so ugly that I wont even visit them any longer.

Dinger, thanks for the update on the subject.

I didn't follow that thread either. Quite frankly, living in Florida I have had enough of both sides of that story. With that said, everyone here has an opinion, whether it be in politics, Ford or Chevy, or drag race vs Circle track. I come here for two reasons. To expand my knowledge through the knowledge of others, and to share what I DO know with those that don't. I always hope that my input is appreciated as I enjoy the posts from other hotrodders here.
There is no place on this board for negative comments whether it be racist, sexist or comments directly derogatory towards other members. I personally would like to thank the moderators for making this board what it is today.

I am a member of several other bulletin boreds/forums. (not all hotrod or even car-related)

Some of them hand you a suspension on a first offense and a lifetime ban on second.

One gave me a lifetime ban on the first offense.

This is ONLY one I have ever been a member of that allows political views or gun control or.... (etc) to be posted

On the others, the "off topic" section is reserved for things like the BBQ recipes I have seen on here, the happy birthday stuff, the jokes and the trivia thread type stuff.

The one where I managed to get myself banned for life was when I noted that even used car salesmen, aluminum siding salesmen and door to door encyclopedia salesmen all have more credibility than ANY politician of any party in any country. That did it - I wuz banned for life from that one! (Political views!)

I did not follow that thread either - I expected it might take the direction it apparently did and wanted no part of it. I come here to learn about all things automotive and help others when I can. I enjoy the humor posts and the occasional rib recipe, but do my best to avoid political topics.

I appreciate the work the moderators do to keep this board a great place to be. Thanks!

I am just the messenger here. One of our more diligent mods took action on this thread. I will say I have been lax in my duties here lately, work is killing me, my summers suck. We had a brief discussion (in the mods forum) as how to handle this situation and ward off any more situations like this. I took it upon myself to get the message out to the members. Please, if anything like this happens again, let us know so we can nip it in the bud, as Barney used to say. We don't need the reputation as to being an "anything goes" site. Thanks to all you guys, we have a great place to hang out and learn. Dan

I did not even look at that thread but from the above posts I am glad I didn't. I so much appreciate the code of conduct that is expected here. It not only agrees with my values but it means the people that I get to communicate with are of the highest caliber. I surf some other sites but few can compare with this one. I deeply appreciate the attitude of the moderators and members of Hotrodders.com.

Thanks to all

A shame about TI getting suspended. Mostly got along w/him and respected his contributions here. Not to beat a dead horse or to pile on, but that's no excuse for crossing a line that he had to know he was crossing. Just like what's been said about porn: "I might not know how to define it, but I know it when I see it". And I believe most of us here saw it as too much, given the venue of an automotive forum. As for why he was first suspended, I don't believe it was anything near as warranted as this case.

I know all about freedom of speech, etc. but hopefully these types of subjects will be watched as promised, and dumped at the first sign of discord that threatens to escalate. We need to remember- this forum is NOT a democracy! Just look how long a thread on street racing lasts... Threads are in the dump right now that were deemed to be inappropriate, like the half dozen or so on guns/gun control. And threads on Obamma. And any number of odd ball/off the wall threads by against all odds when he was "on a roll". And IMHO this type of subject should be no different.

EDIT: And kudos to the mod who took action that he had to have known might meet w/some resistance being as how it was an action against one of the better known contributors here.

True...This isn't about piling on in any way and I still have respect for Tech1's insight, knowledge, in many cases how he is willing to help and how it is obvious that many of his posts are well thought out. He takes the time (and I'm sure it is a lot of time depending on the post) to give correct information.

In situations like this, before I post I ask myself if I would say these things to the persons face and the answer has to be yes before I hit the reply button. I hope Richard reads these posts and understands that he is respected for his contributions on this forum. I have read many of the posts he has written that where engine related, he has answered many of the questions I had that brought me to this site. I've also read some of his posts that where fiery and perhaps somewhat uncalled for but, I thought to myself that I'm sure I've come off strong at times as well and to focus on the education I was receiving.

Thank God we do have freedom of speech however, we also have a society and in order for society to function we need to exhibit tolerance, empathy and control. If we miss displaying these characteristics, often the good that we do is overshadowed by our actions.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I did not read this thread but, several people have gone off the board and informed me as to what had transpired. I appreciate the edification Richard has given me and I also hope that I have helped people on this site with the knowledge I have, what's more important to me is the respect I get as a person...that lasts forever.

Faith, Respect, Trust
Ray
