Could anybody recommend a quality depth mic and a reasonable place to purchase one? I would like to be able to find one that can measure up to four inches in one inch increments.

Brown and Sharp, Starrett, are both very good.

I would look on ebay possibly. Here is a quick search I did showing a few auctions. Just look them over good before you decide. I sold all of mine. I went digital.

Just be careful of some of the Chinese junk. We were installing a power plant in Korea and had some problems with foundation dimensions until one of my field guys finally looked at the contractor issued tape measures - they were marked with 5 increments of 1/4" to the inch - 1.250" equaled 1" on those tapes. Everything was off by at least 25%

Measure twice, cut once and you are still off 50%!

I use the cheaper stuff in areas of the shop that can easily cause damage to measuring instruments. Like in my hands!

LOL, I got tired of batteries going dead in my digitals so I sold them all! They are nice tho when they ain't dead lol. Ya, Starrett and B&S are good quality and that's pretty much all I have with the majority being Starrett. I picked up a brand new depth mic at a pawn shop years ago for 40 bucks...0-6". That's an exception to the rule to find tools like that at a pawn shop but it does happen. Craigslist and E-Bay are others.
