Don't mean to be a SA, but have you checked for spark? What sort of reaction ARE you getting? Does it just turn over, without any popping, or kick at all? If you're getting NO reaction, and the motor turns over and there is sufficient fuel, you might not be getting any ignition at all.

A little more info would be helpful. Is this a recent rebuild?? Are you using the original distributor or have you switched to an electronic distributor??

It sure sounds like you're not getting any spark.

Tom, I don't mean to be a SA either, but I don't think DeSoto ever made a 331. That was a Chrysler size. DeSotos came in 276, 291, 330, 341 and 345 to the best of my knowledge.
