Just what kind of "shop" did the work? A landscape service or something?
If the owner is your "friend", then hit over the head a couple of times with his "seemingly tight" rods...
Sometimes it takes a good friend needs to knock sense into someone.
I concur with everyone else, detonation, improper break-in and lack of lubrication has caused this. Time to start over, and not with the same "shop".
