Detonation problem - very very weird
Parked the camaro last night, came back after work to listen to my baby rumble..
It cranks 30 degrees and then CRACK. Like really bad detonation (rocks in a coffee can). I thought uh oh... valves are hitting a piston. Took spark plugs ou (except six and five), turns over by hand fine, as far as I can tell. When the plugs were out, I tried it again... crack. So I turned it over by hand alittle more and smoke came out of the passenger cylinder bank. Oh yeah, smoke came out of the carb a little bit too. When it does this, it sends the engine going backwards a little, stops it dead in its tracks. Why could this be happening? ![]() Its a 383 with 305 (801's) heads. Only recent changes include swapping the cam and wired the electric choke up. |

Yeah I ran it alll day yesterday. So really the only culprit is sitting overnight, or wiring the choke up, but I dont think that would do anything.
.464/.464 lift. |

Will do, its a china ministarter, cause the solenoid on my gm one broke.
Just weird that its lighting something up still. Thanks. |

It was indeed the starter, one bolt came loose... very loose.
Thanks all ![]() Does anyone have any links to tuning an edelbrock carb (1406). It doesnt start very well. I cant tell if its too lean or too rich and the choke is really finiky. It takes 6-7 revolutions to start. |
