re: Diagnostic tools

I have the Autoxray, have had it for several years and even updated it. For home use it is a really good buy for the money.

re: Diagnostic tools

I work for the Town of Franklin, Ma.. We have the Genusis. We just had it updated with the latest updates which bring it up to the 2004 level. All of these scan tools run about 1 1/2 years behind on the updates. The genusis is fairly simple to figure out and can do alot with it. Our problem is the delay in getting updates as we have 2006 cruiser in our fleet and cannot communicate with the computer to check the codes in the computers.

scan tools

just got rid of a mastertech, looking for a buyer for my genesis.have had my modis for over a year now.will not trade this one in for anything!the modis is faster than the mastertech and the otc genesis.I use it at work and at home, thats why I invested so much money.for home use only I would recommend the genesis (good ones on fleabay).for around 800-1500.but for the work I do the modis is my tool of choice....wolf

I know what you mean. I had an 06 in my shop the other day and had to send them to the dealer cause the scanner I had didn't work. A Code Reader didn't work, The shops scanner didn't work, Snap-on scanner didn't work and I got pissed off and sent them to the dealer, I got talking to one of my buds at the dealer and he told me that they are changing the protocal in the new vehicles coming out, anyone know what this is all about.?????? (Generic OBD2 didn't even work)

I have been doing a little research on the whole laptop and diagnostics with a laptop and wondering how long you have been using it for, I am interested in getting into reading codes and diagnostics from a laptop etc. Wondering what you think of the scan tool. Would you recemend this for a shop to use????

re: Diagnostic tools

For what you're going to do you might try to pickup a used Genysis on Ebay. It would be a decent scan tool for your purposes. Another option, if you own a laptop and are comfortable using it, is software from Autoenginuity. It'll run circles around the Genysis, is cheaper to buy and has MUCH better tech support. OTC tech support is pathetic when compared to other proffessional diagnostic tool suppliers. Btw, the OTC lab scope for the Genysis is crap when compared to real professional grade lab scopes and it's the same or more money. I know, I own 3 scopes and I never use the Genysis one. It was like flushing money down the toilet.

re: Diagnostic tools

In reply to DartShadow1's question, the new protocol is called CAN. I forget what it stands for but I'm sure you could Google it. Scan tools require special software to read the various inputs, outputs, and communications between the various modules on the newer CAN controlled vehicles. That isn't all that new either. I had an early 2000's Blazer in that I needed a CAN protocol scan tool to read the ECM. Newer scan tools can read both the info on older vehicles and the CAN info on newer ones. Autoenginuity makes software compatible with both for laptops. Btw, usually a "code reader" is a waste of money. A code only gives you an area to start looking at, the codes don't tell you what to replace or exactly what's wrong. They only tell you that an input or output is out of range.

re: Diagnostic tools

CAN........Controller Area Network. Basically it allows the modules on a vehicle to communicate directly with each other without having to first communicate with a host module that in turn communicates with the others. The newer the vehicle the more modules it has on it, easily a dozen or more.
