Question Diesel rear end vs. gas?

I'm in the market for a rear end to fit my 86 C10 2wd. A friend said he had an 84 C10 that came with a diesel engine. He did not know what the ratio was. My 86 is running a 273, so I want to get a lower gear. Does anyone know if a diesel rear end will be lower? It will be a few weeks before I can get there to drop the inspection plate.

Diesels work at a lower RPM than gas engines so it was be a fair guess that the rear ratio would be more ( 2ish ) than the one you have.

But I would look at the gears to make SURE.....

The gear ratios in trucks optioned with the diesel engines are either the same as the gas engine optioned trucks with a possibility of a different size tire at the most, or no different at all.

GM seemed to have trouble understanding light duty diesel vehicles and what they needed to do with them until they finally came out with the latest series that they are offering now.

I have a book from the 1981 lineup that shows the Olds conversion diesel equipped trucks, and the available ratio options were not as high of a gear ratio as the gas engine trucks.

If the axle you are interested in has anything in the 3 range it will most likely be the 3.08 gears, and if you are VERY lucky you might find a 3.42 at the most.
