Diff ID \help

Any one help me ID the diff in my 56 Chev 2dr sedan . Only number I can find
on the outside is 3725899. Really don't want to open if I don't have to .

I think it is the original . Car was built with a 6 cyl \manual trany

Guess what I really wanted to know was can you tell what the gears are from this number?

That number is the housing part number, and it tells what make and model, and approximate year of manufacture.

Nothing much else if anything.

If you can determine the year it was made from the numbers, can you determine what gear ratios were available in that year?

There were 3 gear ratios available for my 56 f-100 acording to the shop manual.

Mark the pinion and hub with chalk or a marker. Turn the hub and count how far the pinion turns. If its a little over 4 revolutions you know its 4.10. Its its around 3 1/2 its a 3.50. If its close to 3 3/4 then its a 3.73

Whatever chevy numbers are anyway. Sorry I am not familiar with them.
