What is the difference between primer and sealer? To my knowledge 3 coats primer should always go on bear metal and over filler work, and can be used to fill in LIGHT scratches. You would then block sand it with wet 320 and then paint the car. Now with this in mind what is the point of sealer, I was told that after you block sand the primer you spay 1 coat of sealer on, is this because the primer will take up the water from the paint? If so why do you wet sand the primer, I know that it scratches less but???. Why would you not just seal the metal/filler instead of prime it. All you would need to do is DA the filler/metal with 180-320 to take out the scratches and then feather edge it, correct? I am kinda new to all of this everybody tells me a different way to do things quick and easy. I don't want quick and easy I want paint that won't chip and peel off the car in a few months. That and I leive in the North East and drive it everyday

Primer is porus an thin and will absord moisture as well as be absorbed by many fillers. Sealer is a thicker non poorus outer coating that seal the sheetmetal from the outside world. You should use sealer on bare metal and over the first layer of fillers. primer can be used over the rest but usually not needed because most big bodywork is done before the body is sealed.

You pretty well have the basics down already. Primer is to be used over bare metal and fillers. It is porous and sands easily filling in small imperfections and also making a suitable base for paints and sealers. Sealers are to be used before painting to make a suitable base for the paint. It is as it states. A sealer. It is more compatible with the paints than what primers, glazing, and fillers are and will help prevent bleed thru. Usually before an overall paint job the car is prepped just as if you were going to paint it, then you shoot it overall with a sealer. After the appropriate time the sealer is tacked off with a tack cloth and the painting begins. There are sandable sealers and the non sandable type. Hope this helps.
