I am rebuilding an 8.5" Chevy posi from a 73 Nova (?). I found the code on the axle tube..JP = 3.42 posi. However...I cannot find a Carrier Casting Number. Where is it located on this axle? Maybe too much rust or paint but I haven't found one.
Thanks,
Larry
Don't trust the code on the outside. Somebody might have changed the gears or robbed the posi carrier.
The carrier casting number is cast onto the carrier, inside the rear end. Pop the lid off, then look on the carrier, which is what the ring gear is mounted on. Look inside the carrier & see if you see 4 or 5 horizontal coil springs or a flat, S-shaped spring. If there are no springs, it's not a posi. While you're inside, look on the edge of the ring gear for a set of four 2-digit numbers. Two of those numbers are a date code, and two are the tooth counts for the ring & pinion gears. Divide the big one by the little one and it gives you the gear ratio.
