Dip stick

I recently bought a early 1970's Chevy 350. The engine came out of a 1968 Chevelle and was a running engine when I bought it. When I picked it up the seller explained he broke off the oil dip stick when removing from the car. It is broke off even with the block. Any ideas besides drilling it out? thanks

re:Dip stick

You could try a BIG sheet-metal screw and a dent puller... Not the most subtle approach but I've used it in similar situations.

I'll second the sheet metal screw and slide hammer approach. I've used this successfully on several broken dipsticks, including a couple where the engine was still in the car. It doesn't hurt to try that first and THEN drop the pan if it doesn't work.

If the engine is out take the oil pan off and tap it out. I had to do that with my 1970 small block. Must be a broken dipstick tube epidemic.

Find a screw or bolt that will thread into it a little ways, then find an open-end wrench that barely fits around the bolt shaft. Use a small hammer or something to tap the wrench upward against the head.
