Disc Brake conversion on a '31 Chevy axle?

I am dropping the mighty 392 Chrysler Hemi within the original rails of my '31 Chevy coupe. I recently aquired an original '31 Chevy dual leaf spring front axle and need to purchase a disc brake conversion kit if available... Can anyone advise as to make this happen? I appreciate any info greatly and regard this site as a valuable service! Mike

I would see wwwspeedwaymotors.com, they seem to have a lot of different disc brake set ups. If they don't have it the may be able to direct you to someone that does. You also may be SOL on a bolt on type "kit" so an axel change or machining may be in order. Personally I would change out the entire front end for a new dropped axel/spring/shock unit. That big mopar is a heavy weight and might cause some problems with the 80 yr. old parts.

I tend to agree that the original axle would probably be best changed to something newer. Too many rears of bad roads have probably taken their toll. Here's an interesting site that might help find something else plus some good info in the link's Tech Articles. But if you do choose to add disc's to your existing axle, you will probably be on your own.

Disc Brake conversion on a '31 Chevy axle

Thanks for your replies... Note that I purchased brand new leaf springs from Eaton Detroit Springs and even added two more leafs (from 6 or 7 originally) on each side for the extra weight of this hemi... I'm not going for the "street rod" style as you can clearly see from my avatar photo or if you checked out my albums. My goal is to re-build my coupe as an early sixties show car as close as possible. I'm even looking into purchasing the So-Cal Buick drum brake look to cover the rotors... Mike
