Ok, I'm thinking of pulling my current Hei and going with a new set-up. I also have the msd 6al. I decided to check my timing and noticed that my initial was off about 5 degrees from where It was set at last and my total timing 38 degrees was leveling off at 2,000 instead of the 3,000 it was set for. I pulled the cap and rotor and cleaned everything real good and opened and closed the weights and then put everything back together to see if it was sticking. I did get my 5 degrees of initial back, but the advance curve is still off. Would it be best to go with another distributor? Its not a very good hei to begin with. Looking for something not to expensive, but will do the job. Its a 496 and I only pull 6" of vac on full manifold since it's a weekend street/strip car Im debating on going with or without the vac advance. I'll play with this one to see if I can figure out why it changed the curve on its own. Now that I'm thinking about it they supposedly set the advance curve on the distributor when the motor was dynoed. I was told they set 38 all in at 3,000, but its only advancing to 2,000 with 38 all in "Weird". I'll pull the weights and springs and see if they actually did what they said they did when I get off in the morning. Either somethings wrong or they lied! I'll probably get another dist here in the near future even if I get this figured out. Any advice? Thanks!
