distributor hook up
hey guys i really need help. i have put a 302 out of a 75 ford truck into a 70 mustang. the problem is that the old distributor was a points type and only had one wire that went to the coil. the new one is electronic, has three wires, and i don't know what to connect them to in order to make the system function. the old engine was an i6 or i would just swap distributors. any help would be greatly appreciated

re: distributor hook up
You will need a Ford Duraspark ignition control box, and the correct Duraspark electronic ignition coil. Depending on the Duraspark box used, it may require a ballast resistor or not.
There is NO way to connect the Duraspark distributor you have to power and the coil and have it make a spark, it HAS to have the Ford ignition box, and the correct coil to work. When you get the box and coil, the dist will plug directly into the box, and there are 3 or 4 other wires that need connection, box to neg side of the coil, box to power source (resistor or not), ground and start power. The coil will also need a power source wire, either resisted or not, depending on the Ford ignition box used. After you get the box and correct Ford coil, use Doc's diagram for proper wire up. An MSD 6 series ignition box will plug directly into the Ford Duraspark dist as is, with one of the adapters that come with the MSD box. Wire the MSD box ro MSD wiring diagram for Ford, and it should work that way as well. |
