If the timing mark is on zero, does that mean the #1 piston on a sbc is at TDC? If so can you then put the #1 plug wire where the rotor is pointing? Thanks.

Yes it should be at TDC, but it is at TDC twice, once on intake stroke, once on exhaust stroke.
watch your #1 intake vake open and start to close and then roll it on up to TDC and then its pointing at #1 firing.

Doc here,

#1 Cylinder, COMPRESSION, TDC, Both Intake and Exhaust Dead Closed, timing marks lined up..If you want EXACT top dead center, get a slurpee straw and stick it in the plug hole, roll the crank by hand until the ONLY direction the straw goes is DOWN..that is EXACT TDC..

Install the Dizzy, traditionally, on an SBC, #1 will point 5 to 7 O'clock on the cap..

Stick with this unless you have space issues (tunnel ram or other obstructions from the advance pot) It will cost you less in the long run..( flunking smog because the tech thinks #1 is at 7 'clock but is like #4..and can't get base timing..Or the next wrench that tunes it up can't find #1, won't run but backfires well.. and spends 40 hours tracking it down on a simple tune up..) All the Manuals show this position..

Direction of rotation is clockwise..

1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2...

Remember: as you set the Dizzy in place, as it seats the rotor will turn, as much as a tower width because the gears are beveled, test "stab it" and note how much, then set the rotor BACK an equal amount and install it..be sure the pump shaft is lined up as you do..

Set the advance right in the middle of the travel of the dizzy, (stop to stop, then back to center( tighten the hold down good enough to hold it but loose enough you can move advance/retard) and start it..If you did it right it should fire on the second crank..

Then with a light set your timing to spec's..

When looking at the vortec head with the valve cover off, is the exhaust valve the one on the left or right on cyclinder #1 It appears the exhaust manifold lines up with the one on the left. Thanks.

Doc Here,

The Port that goes to the header through the valve is the Exhaust..

The port that Goes through the intake runner and valve is Intake..

Just follow the castings to figure which is which..The Valve stems actually go through the Port inside the heads..so It's pretty Self ~ Evident.

FOR timing you really Don't need to know this, just That Both are DEAD closed on TDC..
