Distributor Install

I have a HEI Vacuum Advance distributor that i'm puttin on a 383. When i bought the engine originally it never had a distributor in it and i have since replaced everything besides the block.

My question is how do i know where to put the distributor and where is number one on it? There are no markings on any of the points or terminals. Some people say to point the vacuum advance towards the #1 cylinder. So then if i just found the closest point to the rotor in clockwise motion, is that #1?
