Ditzler DZL-72 red oxide primer-surfacer
Anyone know anything about this primer? Ive got a full gallon of this stuff and was wondering if its any good.

Tuck it away for another 10 years and it might be worth some money as an antique. It will also work well for use as a guide coat.

Hi,
Ditzler(PPG) in general is a great product and I've been using their line nearly exclusive for thirty+ years. If I remember right,DZL is a lacquer based primer for medium build surfacing. But this stuff is old and I would'nt chance its stability. If you do eventually primer something, look into epoxy based primers. They're great substraits to paint on. I wont be using it then, I got it for free but I dont think Ill paint my Charger with it

Hi Mitmaks,Good choice. Its better to be safe than sorry.Be sure to dispose of that old primer properly. It plays hell on the ground water,so try not to put it in the garbage. Most paint supply houses are willing to help a guy out and add it to they're hazardous waste loads.Give 'em a call.

Use it for a guidecoat, reduce it 100-200% with lacquer thinner and spray a light mist coat over your surface before sanding, it will highlight the low areas and any scratches, defects, etc... Lacquer usually doesn't go bad in a sealed container, if it mixes up fine it'll be OK to use as a guidecoat.

I think I found someone who's going to use it. If not Ill just recycle it at work, we got special paint recycler where we recycle all the paint.
