Divorced Choke?

I just bought a 4165 Holley Speadbore carb with mechanical secondaries and it has a divorced choke. What is a divorced choke and how is it used? I thought I have a manual choke and just hook up a choke cable to it. Now I'm not sure. I checked other venues' on the net, but nothing explains what a divorced choke is or how it works.!! Any help would be appreciated.

On "divorced" chokes the choke thermostat which consists of a bi-metal coil spring is mounted over the exhaust crossover passage in the intake manifold and a linkage rod connects it to the choke linkage on the carb. There is no practical way I have ever found to convert a Holley Spreadbore with this setup to a hand or electric choke mounted on the carb. There are electric conversions that replace the spring on the manifold but they mount in the manifold where the spring would have been. There were Holley Spreadbores made with hand chokes but they are hard to come by and when they show up on eBay bring a pretty penny since they usually also had dual feed center hung float bowls.

Divorce Choke

Thanks for the info. That's what I thought, but wasn't sure. I have an original 56 Desoto manifold and it doesn't have provision for that type of choke. The carb is in nice shape and price was right. I'll have to look for a Holley that will have manuel choke and mechanical secondaries in the 600 to 650 cfm range. Thanks again.

divorced choke

I did the same thing; i.e. bought a carb w/divorced choke thinking manual choke. It hasn't arrived yet, can I just use it and ignore the choke, and just let the engine warm up, we live in the south and I only drive the vette when its nice out.

You'll have to rig something to keep the choke open or it will stay closed, without the rod hooked up.
