DIY LED Tail Lighting

I'm wondering, is there anyone out there making their own scratch built, trick LED lighting systems? I'm talking about from raw LEDs, circuit boards, wires, resistors, laying on the table with solder gun/iron and DMM at the ready to build.

I was looking into doing this awhile back too and just sort of put that project on the back burner but some good info would be nice. I came up with a few things on a quick google search. I found this and this and I have bought LED's from these guys before for another project and they have been pretty good.

I saw a really trick home built display that included the circuit board wiring and all. Nothing was off the shelf ready, which was pretty cool. But I'll be darned if I can find the web site again. The guy had built the lighting for his motor cycle but it had sequencers for turn signals, break and tail lights all in one unit. If I can find it again, I'll post the link here.
