i have an old 62 caddy that i had apart for a while and i lost the heat riser for the exhaust. do i need to purchase one or can i just bipass it?

You should be able to get by without it, especially in Texas. It's purpose is to increase exhaust flow through the intake manifold while it warms and then the bi-metal spring opens it as the heat transfers through ,so it is open most of the time (once again...especially in Texas).
