Do you need to use ring compressors?

Hi ,just wondering if I have to buy a ring compressor to install my piston and ring assemblies into my block?Or if I can just do it by hand?

if you think you don't need a ring compressor for installing pistons should you really be building an engine. Go spend 10 bucks and buy a ring compressor. how would you do them without one.

You "-CAN-" put pistons in their holes without one, but you run a BIG risk of breaking a ring and oil rings are almost impossible to get in.

Make it easy on yourself and go buy one, they come in handy....

Thousands of engines have been built using nothing more than an over-sized hose clamp.

But, yeah, get a compressor. There's no need to make things any harder than they need to be.

Be aware there are different styles, and they cost form a few dollars to quite a bit.

The old, steel sheet coiled w/a tensioning device was used for years by many mechanics. These are relatively cheap, but can be a bit of a beach to use for a beginner.

There are dedicated bore size "compressors" that are basically a tapered ring of the same size as the bore that will compress the rings as the piston is slid into the bore. Generally, these are the easiest to use. Down side is they are a little high, price-wise and only fit one bore size correctly.

Then there are "pliers-type" compressors. They generally work well after being properly adjusted. Cost a bit more, but can be used on a variety of bore sizes.

Don't forget to use a couple pieces of fuel hose over the rod bolts to protect the bores from getting nicked. You can also buy these sleeves made for the purpose.

if you have the right size band clamp oil filter wrench, I don't see why it wouldn't work if you got someone to hold it compressed while you tapped the pistion in

I have an adjustable hard plastic one from Total Seal- it works GREAT. I think its only like $30 too. For a highschool kid that may sound like a lot, but for an engine build its about the same amount you'll spend on sealants and such- pocket change.
