might not be too bad a deal but if the engine has sat that long fully assembled then you'll probably want to get new valve springs, too.

why not get a cheaper 360 or 318? everybody goes for the 340 and they're great engines but very expensive to build.

hey slanty;

Beware of engines someone else built. There is no way of knowing for sure what you're getting, or the quality of the assembly.

I bought a 390 FE stored with no carb. Buddy sold the carb cause he was broke. Later,he was broker, and sold me the engine, assuring the intake had always been covered.

Lonng story/short: the engine wouldn't run, pulled the head w/no compression, mice or chipmunks filled the runners w/corn and soybeans, valves were jammed open.

I agree w/ johnny. get a stocker that runs, and let the Huntsville ho keep the 340.

Do you get the "Super Shopper" in your town? It's a good buy & sell mag for central Ontario. If not, last week's issue is always online.

agreed with the previous posts, but curious about one thing... johnnymopar, why would sitting for a while make a difference for the valve springs? wouldn't running the engine cause far more fatigue/stress/weakening/posibility of damage than just sitting? or is it that some will have been stored compressed and others stored extended, and so there will eventually be a difference between them?
good advice otherwise

Wink

If the motor has been sitting for a long time without having the crank rotated occasionally the springs that have been compressed will loose some of their tension capabilities. Just like coil springs on your front suspension, when they have been under compression they will settle.

When the engine has a lot of miles on it the valve springs will also loose some of their compression but in that case it's all of them equally and not just the ones that have been compressed for long periods.

The solution is to rotate the crank every once and a while a quarter turn so all the springs change position. I built the 461 Chevy BB in my pro street coupe 3 years before the car was ready to be started. I went out once a month and rotated the crank and it has performed flawlessly since it was first started over 5 years ago.

You do realize you gotta change the k-frame to put a V8 in there, don't you? And how about turning off your caps lock, the only one that gets to yell around here is me.
