dodge pickup engine swap

hey,
I have a 1982 dodge 1/2 ton pickup...it currently has a slant six in it and I am wondering what all would be necessary to drop a 318 from a similar truck in it...I am pretty sure that I would need the bellhousing and flywheel from the 318 as the six's do not line up (as far as I know)...do the motor mounts line up and all? is there anything else that I should know about? I don't really know a lot about dodges, figured it can't be as straightforward as a chevy...thanks

re: dodge pickup engine swap

It's as strait-forward as a Chevy.

Just grab the motor mounts out of the donor truck along with the engine and it's pretty much a bolt in. (I'd grab the trans as well if you can afford it.) Might think about replacing the radiator and eventually the rear end too especially if you're thinking about adding HP to the 318.

I think the question is........Is the "K" member thing going to be a factor, like many of the other MOPAR swaps?

Im kind of wondering to, as a buddy has been talking about a similar swap, although he will probably never get up off his arse long enough to do it.

dodge pickup engine swap

I have done this swap. It's straight forward, BUT, remember on many 318 MOPARS the crankshaft used in automatics, is not drilled for a pilot bushing and therefore will not work with a standard transmission. Engines that came with a standard transmission have a pilot bushing and will work with an automatic transmission.

Swapping the 318 is real easy, the bellhousing on the six will fit jf it is a low mount starter. 72thru82 truck mounts(V8) arethe same. I used the mounts , bellhousing and cutch linkage when I put my 440 in my 81 3/4 ton. I used a radiator out of a 82 1ton that had a 360 in it. Good luck

thanks for the replies...truck's a four speed manual, so I'll just try and find a donor truck, should be plenty around...I'm not really looking at building up a hot rod engine for this truck as it's mainly just for transportation/work...the slant six thats in it is just unbearably underwhelming...

I would also grab the z-bar(equalizer bar) and the clutch fork with the V8 bell-housing if your are doing a slant six to a V8 swap, there is a big difference between the two.
