Dodge Ram 1500 Problems

This doesn't really have anything to do with hotrodding but I need some help and you guys all seem pretty helpful.... So my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 makes a terrible grinding noise when put in drive or reverse. Sometimes the engine dies right away then or the truck will scoot forward and the breaks become extrememly weak. I know this year is notoriously bad for transmission problems. Any ideas?
