Does everything have a fuel return line?

I am putting a 1978 454 into my 1970 monte carlo. when i looked at my fuel line there was only one but the fuel pump has a place for a return line. does every car have one? the car had no motor when i got it. i have built the motor through an instruction book but it doesnt cover hooking it up and making it run. thanks

Some do and some dont, depends on the vehicle. If the car does not have a return line to the tank then I would get a pump without the return nipple.

From what I understand, the fuel return line was added to allow fuel to flow continuously, even if the carb is not drawing much fuel, and that keeps the fuel cool enough to prevent vapor lock. Your car may run fine without a return line under hot conditions, but you never know.

If you are smart enough to put the motor together, then you are certainly smart enough to add a return line to the Monte Carlo. Do not plug the return line on that pump. Either run a return line and use that pump or use another pump that has no return. Your Monte Carlo did not originally have a return line. The motor was carbureted and used a mechanical fuel pump that had pressure low enough that the pressure did not overpower the needle and seat in the carburetor bowl. I don't know what carb you're using, but the AFB, Performer and Quadrajet will not tolerate over about 5 psi fuel pressure. If your pump builds more pressure than that, the excessive pressure will blow past the needle and seat and load up the intake manifold with raw fuel. You will have a tuning nightmare on your hands.
