does spline matter with carrier

Havent been on here in a while been on gbodyforums glad to be back on here where i seem to get the most help and accurate anwers. Okay heres the deal i have a 87 buick regal limited 7.5 10 bolt rear end i want to change gears with a posi. So when im bout to purchase the ring and pinion with the carrier i see it says 28 spline carrier. I was told that my regal has 26 splines then i went to look on jegs and look at ring and pinions and they say it is 27 splines.

So my question is does it matter what spline it is as long as it fits in the houseing. I got the biggest headace ever

The axle spline count must exactly match the spline count of the side gears in the diff you use. You will probably find you have 26 spline axles. Would be a good time to upgrade to 28 spline axles when you swap the diff if the engine is making some HP and/or you have traction.

Cobalt327 is correct, your Regal will have 26-Spline Axles/Carrier.
The '27-Spline' refers to the Pinion Gear's spline count where the Yoke attaches.

According to Richmond & Summit:
(78 to 88 Monte Carlo came with the 7.625" Ring Gear. the 7.5"s came in the Cutlass, Malibu and Regals.)

The 7.5" Carrier has 2 big access windows and the 7.625" Carrier has one big access window and the other side has a small one.
Windows= Openings in Carrier where you can see the Spider Gears & (Springs "If Posi").
