dome light

OK, here's a weird one: I need to rewire the dome light in my '56 Chevy stepside. I don't want to wire it to the headlight switch, instead I'm just going to put a basic toggle switch on it. Problem is, I ran mechanic's wire as far as I could through the hole where the original wiring came through on the light fixture, and I can't make any progress--in other words, I can't figure out where to run the wire to power. I assumed it snaked down behind the driver's leftshoulder (more or less) and under the running board and up into the firewall. But I can't do it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

An addendum: I still have my gas tank behind the seat, so there's no way to access it by dropping it straight down behind the driver's seat.

You can always go with a grommet through the floor , under the cab and then back into the cab if you can get to the floor? Of course you will want to use some plastic wire wrap to protect the wire from the elements and whatnot. Remember that if you want to use door buttons to activate the light, the buttons are the ground side of the light. That way there is no positive power at the door button, it just makes the ground for the light when doors are opened. Your power can be from a full time fused positive terminal, switched or unswitched, or like you want, a toggle. If you are just going with a positive and a negative two wire install then passing the wire through the back of the cab will have to be basic wiring 101. Hope this helps. Jmac

Thanks for the reply. I did just as you suggest--ran it under the floor, drilled a hole, put in a grommet and put a toggle in line right where my left hand falls behind the driver's seat.
