Have you checked your door switches yet? When the door is open, the switch completes the dome lamp path to ground. So if the are staying on, check and make sure the switches are open when pushed in ( and not stuck in). This may sound stupid, but make sure the switch (headlight) isn't al the way to the right in the dome lamp posistion and that this switch is completing the ground circuit for the lamp. Hope this helps. Maybe Doc will be along with a schematic for you.

You don't need a wire diagram for something this simple. If the door jams aren't pushed in, and you lights aren't on, just remove the dome light, and simply fallow the wire untill you find the short.

Doc here,

Don't have a Schematic for a 73 Road Runner, but I can tell you how it is wired, and the most probable cause for this situation.

The Dome light switch is wired Direct from a Fuse on the Fuse panel. On the other side of the Dome light socket, there is a white wire that goes to the Door post switches, in a daisy chain arrangement. That same wire goes back to the Dome light portion of the light switch.

If you pull any switch out of the door post, you will see that the switch is a one terminal switch, center conductor. This is because the second terminal is actually ground of the switch body where it contacts the door post.

When the door opens, the switch being spring loaded, pushes the center contact forward to the switch body , Completing the ground circuit. Thus, the light goes on. When the Door closes and contacts the switch plunger, it pushes the center contact AWAY from the switch ground, thus, the light goes out.

First, Carefully pull all the switches out of the door posts, they should just slide right out.., so that none are on ground. The dome lamp should be out. If it is , Replace the switches one by one until the light comes back on again, this will be a defective switch. Replace as needed.

If the light does not go out, Then you have a short in one of two places, the wire going from the lamp socket to the switches, or the wire going from (Usually) The left front switch , to the headlight switch. Pull the wires off the left front switch and see if it goes out, If so, then you have to troubleshoot that wire and correct it (shorted to ground) .

If it does not go out, then you have to repair or replace the wire between the lamp socket and the first switch in the chain. (have to fish the headliner )

In somewhat rarer Cases, the headlamp switch Dome function could be bad also.

my '51 Chevy is doing this too, I have to shut the switch off manually with the switch on the dome. pushing the switch on the driver side makes the light flicker, so I just need to clean the ground contact

Is there something in the air? My '97 C1500 dome light (delay light ) was just on and wouldn't go off fo rnothing tonight too. Went to work for bro-in-law, got back to the truck after dark and lights were still on. Once I got it running, the lights went out, but the lights both overhead and on the doors flickered on. I was home for almost 45 minutes before I must've slammed the truck enough to get it to stay dark. Even the dome override wouldn't help.

Thanks for the info Doc, Chet.

Have you tried to take the place of the door? That is push the switch into the jamb by using your finger. If that is it then readjust the switch towards the door. I vaguely remember having this problem once. I think that the engine vibration had loosen the switch or something. Anyway it could be as simple as that.
