Don Garlits suffers stroke - wife in hospital

Don suffered a minor stroke shortly after being told his wife will never come home from the hospital. Don is one of the greatest most down to earth guys you would ever want to meet, and our thoughts and prayers are with them both.

It is sad he will lose his wife. That must have been hard news to get. After all those years of being together.
I am glad he will be OK also. God Bless the Garlits Family

The version I heard was that Don's wife, Pat, has Alzheimer's and Dementia, and that he has been taking care of her for some time now-

Sad, I understand he's almost 81-it sure sucks to get old in some ways-

I found this:

"Don Garlits suffered a mild stroke on Sunday, a spokesperson for the Garlits family confirmed. He is already on the road to recovery and back at work.

Hes doing okay and has gotten most of his memory back, said Francine Head, a Garlits assistant at the Museum. She took him to the hospital on Sunday.

It is believed the stroke was triggered by stress related to bad news hed received regarding wife Pat, whose health has been in decline lately. Garlits checked her into the hospital on Friday and was told by hospital officials she was unable to leave the hospital on Sunday.

Head was with Garlits when he suffered the stroke.

It was intense, she said. We were about to clean up the cabin where [longtime associate] Tommy [TC] Lemons was living and hed been told the day before that his wife couldnt come home. Those two stressors did him in. One of the last things I asked Don was if he was talking to anyone about how he felt. I think that was the last thing I said to him before this happened."

It all sucks, damn it. I can't imagine, I don't want to think about but I do once in a while, to live without my wife, I just can't imagine! If Don feels about is wife like I do about mine, I feel for him so much, my prayers are with them.

Only a few years older than I. But I don't agree that it sucks to get old. You have to experience it to appreciate every day and every challenge. Don't waste your time dreading it: just pray that you live long enough to enjoy your senior years. I know that Don will not enjoy life as much with his wife gone, but he will be relieved when she is not suffering any more (if Alzheimers and Dementia patients suffer). Life is not always kind, but we can make it a lot tougher than it really is.

Man this is really a shame, losing his best pal TC and then this bad news. I saw Don and Pat at the SEMA show a few years ago, she was in a wheel chair but I didn't know the circumstances. Still remember him mid 60's coming out to Lions to race the west coast boys, what an innovator, that guy would try anything...and it usually worked...the Smokey Yunick of drag racing.
