Donor for a 5 or 6 speed trans (GM)

I'm looking to swap out my auto trans for a manual unit in my firebird. Looking for a new trans is a bit of a depressing proposition as all the new 5 and 6 speed performance transmissions are thousands of dollars. Are there any stock units out there that would be worth the trouble? I'd like to have an overdrive gear to reduce the highway RPM of my 3.73's...

Thanks guys-

K

You should be able to find a Borg Warner 'world class T-5' that actually came in some of the third gen F-bodies.

Thanks, I'm working with a second-gen but i'm sure I could make it fit. Are those transmissions worth the trouble? Can they stand up to 400+ horse?

The T5, even a world class version, will not live long if driven hard at your Hp level. You are looking at needing a Tremec or a T56 6-speed at your power level.
