A well prepared block and some good parts and well prepared set of Vortec heads would make a very good engine as when we are not busy in the shop we build a few of these for some of our these customers an they seem to be very happy with the results.

Those 882 heads won't even compare to a set of the Vortec heads.

The heads are whats holding it back. I would go with a forged crank if you plan on having more than one HP/cubic inch.

Clylinders that are bored off a squared deck and then plate honed will add horse power over one that is not and adding cubic inches will make a differance from what we have seen in the engines we have been building.

True, but I think he meant in the chase for 500 hp, a little overbore isn't an effective means of gaining big power.

Agreed with the head recommendations. Some mildly ported vortecs will get you there, but not 882s.
