That is a hard one, once it gets stuck, you are stuck.Do you have any idea of how it was hitting, was the door high or low? Forward or back you can still see. Look at your gaps, is the front much larger or smaller than the back? It often is the striker being caught in the latch, not that the latch won't come unlatched, it's that the striker is wedged into it.

So first report back here as to were the door may be.

If the panel is off its ezjust reach down and unscrewthe strikerfrom inside but chances are its just jamed up so while holding the handle up have someone push open the door (real hard)from inside, you may need a pry bar...You always remove the striker before trying to adjust a door ,when it fits and gaps are good then you replace the striker...... last.
sounds to me the door is to far back and wedged the door between the striker shims....

We had the door lined up good and were just trying to see where the striker should be moved to and the first latch clicked . That's where we left it as we ran out of time but it didn't want to let go of the door !

Well that does sound like it's just the latch. Inner trim panel on or off? As DBM said if the panel is off you should be able to get in there and release it. It sound like there is something a little bit more going on here.

sounds like the striker is binding the latch but the latch isn't really jambed so to speak. DBM has a great solution. Don't even hesitate to have the guy use his feet while you're holding the handle button and pulling with the same hand. It should fly right open. Sometimes you'll have to kick that darn thing open.
